Product Description
'In this short and worthwhile historical novella, the author uses her literary imagination and knowledge of recent Irish history to engage the reader in an important dimension in the struggle for Irish freedom. The means she uses are the memoirs of the daughter of a fictitious landlord in County Roscommon. The daughter's name is Henrietta Duckworth.
The memoirs cover the forty years leading up to the 1916 Rising. The author enables the reader to experience in a vicarious manner the personal, domestic and social impact of the decline of the dominant Irish landed ascendancy. More than that, she points to the complexity of the role of some members of that ascendancy in their support for the cultural and political movements which resulted in the changes leading towards Irish independence.
