Founded as the Irish Literary Theatre by Lady Gregory and WB Yeats, the Abbey Theatre played a key role in the Irish Revival. From small beginnings in a slum hovel behind a butcher's shop, attacked by churchmen and critics, it saw debuts from Synge, O'Casey, Behan, Mac Liammóir and many more.
