Product Description
When in 1869 Fr. Bernard O'Loughlin, C.P. founded St. Joseph's Church, he wrote it would be a Catholic parish "for all those at Paris who speak the English language." Over the next century and a half, this was one of the few descriptions that never changed.
St. Joseph's Church is both a Catholic parish and a foreign community living in modern Paris. Its first century saw the Franco-Prussian War and the Commune, the glittering Belle Epoque, near expulsion by anti-clericals, the First World War and the Roaring Twenties and then poverty during the Depression, the Second World War and the Occupation. It saw off a postwar challenge to its very existence.
The last third of its history has seen a switch from the English to the Irish Passionist province and the construction of a new church. The congregation has gradually globalized and now includes Catholics from over 40 countries. The Covid pandemic might have crippled the parish, but it fought back thanks to YouTube, Zoom and the generosity of its priests and parishioners.
If Fr. O'Loughlin reappeared, he would find a very different St. Joseph's. But it is still Catholic, still on Avenue Hoche and still speaking English.
