Product Description
At 2 AM on Tuesday 8th August 1922, Emmet Dalton and 450 Free State Soldiers landed at Passage West in Cork Harbour, in one of tHe most notable surprise attacks in Irish military history. Their target was Cork City, an important symbol of Republican ( Anti-Treaty) resistance to the new Provisional Government. This daring amphibious assault opened a three day fight for Cork city and its environs. The battle ended with the victorious Free State Army being cheered and welcomed on the streets of Cork by the population, after the Republicans retreated, burning the city's barracks and police stations behind them. The Battle for Cork explores conditions in Cork City prior to the Passage West landings, provides a detailed account of the battle, and explains how the Republicans lost their 'rebel capital' and suffered a blow in their Civil War campaign.
