Internment without trial was introduced in Northern Ireland; Irish Government ministers were dismissed after allegations of illegal gun-running; thirteen civilians were shot by British paratroopers in the tragedy of 'Bloody Sunday'; the British Embassy in Dublin was burned to destruction by a rioting crowd.
