Betsy, the true hero of the book is a runaway adventurous goose... The grey goose sets of to market to see the world and finds Sheila, a young girl working in one of the inns in Kilnevin. Sheila is a little Cinderella type, living with nasty Maggie Fagan. Sent to get 3lbs of butter from Bridgie Swallow, Sheila and the goose embark on an adventure, strange and magical enough to rival Alice in Wonderland. All manner of events occur, from the everyday (railways, horse races, fairs) to the magical - the Children of Lir pop up(Irish mythical children turned into swans), along with talking animals, a magic scarecrow and much more.
