a fantastic historical songbook
Ten Faithful Years (1913–1923) in Song & Story is a fantastic historical songbook — it is a deeply moving tribute to the courage, sacrifice, and spirit of a generation that shaped Ireland. Ray’s beautiful writing brings to life a turbulent decade that encompassed the Great War and the struggle for Irish freedom, told through a wonderful blend of story and song. By focusing on the lived experiences of people in Tullamore and Offaly, it transforms sweeping national history into something so human. The local stories mirror the wider Irish experience, reminding us that history is not only made in the big cities or famous battlefields, but in small towns, homes, and communities. As a physical book, the hardback format gives it the presence it deserves. It’s a keepsake to be passed down through generations. It is both a reference work and a memorial, a celebration of cultural heritage and a remembrance of sacrifice. Above all, Ten Faithful Years (1913–1923) in Song & Story succeeds because it understands that history lives in story and song. It honours the heroes of a defining decade in Ireland, not only by recounting their deeds, but by preserving the music that carried their hopes and sustained their communities. This book is for anyone who wishes to feel a real sense of Ireland during one of its most defining eras. It stands as a testament to resilience, identity, and the enduring power of song. Elaine Cullen, Tullamore

5/5
For almost decade Ray Daly has worked diligently to bring together a collection of historical, musical and photographic sources to tell the story of the revolutionary period in Offaly. The end product will be of great interest to history enthusiasts from both Offaly and further afield. Aidan Doyle, Ferbane

EXCELLENT
For anyone interested in local Irish history, or the power of songs, this is a rewarding and deeply engaging read. The research is thorough, with careful attention to dates and names. Despite its size, it’s surprisingly hard to put down. Each chapter draws you on. Along with the history, I love reading the words of all the ballads I would highly recommend this book, a great read. Donal Dold, Tullamore
