Product Description
from the blurb- 'The book 'The Republic of Ireland' starts where Connolly's Labour in Irish History left off - the first to be conceived and written from a Socialist point of view . The book begins by analysing Irish society up to the Famine, evaluating what the author calls ' the bourgeois historical myths of the period - Gaelic ireland, Grattan's Parliament and Daniel O'Connell. Having thus set his own terms of reference, Lysaght continues through the period 1847-1910, studies in depth the 'Revolution Subverted' between 1910and 1923, and goes on to discuss the Cosgrave administration, through to developments post 1957 with Fianna Fáil governments. He considers key elements in the society of the new Irish state- farmers, petty bourgeoisie, church, and organized labour.
