Behind Closed Doors' by Eileen O’Dee is a deeply honest, personal, frank and courageous account of surviving domestic abuse — and the strength it takes to choose a different future. This is a story of resilience, of protecting what matters most, and of finding hope beyond fear.
A street angel and a house devil.
The public called him a gentleman, while at home, he called his wife … a cunt.
Behind Closed Doors, the book from debut author and intimate abuse survivor Eileen O’Dee, opens the front door on domestic violence and invites the reader inside a reality too often hidden from view. What unfolds is a raw and unflinching account of coercive control, fear, and survival. But this is also the story of a mother who refused to let abuse define her children’s future. With nothing but courage and fierce love, she made the life-altering decision to leave, guiding her family out of darkness and into the unknown.
As they rebuild their lives piece by piece, hope begins to take root. This is a story of resilience, of breaking cycles, and of finding strength when everything feels lost. The truth in these pages is hard. It is real.
If for any reason you want this book, if for any reason you need this book, it was written for you.
Eileen O’Dee, (a pseudonym) is the author and the writer of Behind Closed Doors. She is a mother who watched and learned and realised the life she had was not the life she wanted for her children and only she could change it. This book was not planned, it was created. It was born out of a need to write. Journaling daily to try make sense of what her life had become. Thinking she was crazy she asked her trusted support worker to read it. They saw its potential and planted a seed which has grown into this book.
