A paperback ( Ward River Press, Dublin, 1980) of Tim Pat Coogan's influential account of the H-Block prison 'Dirty Protest' in the 1970's to the time of publication.
This is the true first edition, no hardcover was issued. In itself, the book was controversial , in that some accused Coogan of taking the side of the protesters - in fact he does not, and retrospectively the book reads as one of Coogan's best works - it sets out the case clearly, and details both the squalid conditions in the H Block, as well as the IRA's ruthless campaign against prison warders in retaliation.
