Product Description
Published by Harper Collins UK, 1991 this is a hardcover fully illustrated single volume edition of the three volumes comprising The Lord of the Rings , with interiorart by Alan Lee .
The Alan Lee-illustrated edition of The Lord of the Rings was first published as a single volume on September 19, 1991. This edition was released by HarperCollins publishers to commemorate the centenary of J.R.R. Tolkien's birth in 1891.
This classic one-volume format features 50 full-colour illustrations by the renowned fantasy artist Alan Lee, who later went on to win an Academy Award for his work as a conceptual designer on Peter Jackson's film adaptations. I'd gop so far as to say that Lee's artwork was crucial to the success and looks of the subsequent films, in that he captures the essence of the books ( particularly so in the Mordor illustrations)
First edition thus (i.e the first UK edition of this Alen Lee centenary ILLUSTRATED EDITION, It is obviously not a first edition set of the books themselves)
Condition - I've seen a few of these sets where the book is damaged ( the set is very heavy) but this copy is in very good condition( dustjacket and book itself) - The sole flaw is some very minor dustdarkening to the top of the page block, and a faint red smudge to the base of the page block.
Full text of all three volumes - The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of the King. ( Some subsequent single volume editions and slipcased also contained The Hobbit - this does not) .
All illustrations in colour, in dark brown cloth with titles and JRRT emblem to front covers in gilt finish. Corners sharp, no bumping. No inscriptions, etc.
Due to weight, I regret postage outside Ireland is very high on this item.
