Frank Ryan born in Knocklong, Limerick in 1902 was a prominent member of the Irish Republican Army, editor of An Phoblacht, leftist activist and leader of Irish volunteers on the Republican side in the Spanish Civil War. . He was imprisoned and wounded several times during his lifetime. During World War II he collaborated with the German Abwehr under the theory that 'the enemy of my enemy is my friend' He died in Berlin in 1944.
